Katherine Bomer
has taught primary and intermediate grades in New York City, Indiana, and most recently, Texas. Her classrooms have been featured in video productions by public television stations, Annenberg/CPB, and the New Standards Project. She worked as a professional developer for five years at the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project with Lucy Calkins, and she continues to consult for that community as a keynote speaker, a teacher of advanced courses in reading and writing, and a professional developer to thousands of teachers in hundreds of classrooms in the Instructional Regions of New York City.
She is the author of Writing a Life: Teaching Memoir to Sharpen Insight, Shape Meaning—and Triumph Over Tests! (Heinemann, 2005). With Randy Bomer, she wrote For a Better World: Reading and Writing for Social Action (Heinemann); with Lucy Calkins, she wrote A Writer's Bookshelf (Harper Junior Books); and she has written articles and book chapters appearing in National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) and International Reading Association (IRA) publications. Katherine has served on the Executive Committee of NCTE and served on the National Center on Education and the Economy (NCEE) committee to compose the New Standards for Reading and Writing, Grades 4 and 5.
Currently, she is an educational consultant in districts across the US. A frequently-requested keynote speaker, she also teaches at summer institutes around the country.
