Lea MacDonald

Lea MacDonald is a graduate of Fordham University with a Masters in
Curriculum and Teaching and has taught middle grade social studies for the last 12
years in Pleasantville, NY. When Lea is not in the classroom, she is sharing her ideas
with teachers in her school, state, and across the country. Lea has been a presenter at the
Nuts and Bolts Symposium on middle-level education in Boulder, CO, for the last 12
years and is a popular presenter for many other national organizations. Lea has received
numerous awards and recognition for her work with middle-level students. In 1996, she
received an award from the New York State Middle School Association for making "exemplary contributions to
middle level education." The Westchester Council for Social Studies awarded Lea the Outstanding Middle
School Classroom Teacher Award for 1996-1997. In October 1994, she received the New York State English
Council Educator of Excellence Award for integrating English and Social Studies in the classroom. Most
recently, the Pleasantville School District recognized Lea’s commitment to teaching with their Teacher of the
Year Award in April 2000. Lea serves on the New York State Middle School Association Board of Directors.
Furthermore, she has published articles on educating young adolescents and writes a quarterly column called
“Lea’s Lessons” in the New York State Middle School Journal, In Transition. Lea's passion is to motivate
young adolescents to become lifelong learners as they face the challenges of the 21 st century.
