Sophie Trecker taught for 6 years at PS 116 in Manhattan. She taught
kindergarten for 3 years and then looped with her class to first grade where
she continued teaching for 3 more years. She was the kindergarten literacy
leader and then served as the grade leader in first grade. Sophie has
experience developing and implementing balanced literacy and the workshop
model of reading and writing. She has mentored teachers who are new to this
model as well as presented workshops to them. Sophie has experience working
with a variety of children including ELL students and students with special
needs; she co-taught in an inclusion kindergarten classroom. Sophie has
also worked as a supervisor in the Curriculum and Teaching department at
Teachers College; she worked with student teachers to develop and implement
curriculum in various grade levels. In addition to mentoring student
teachers with curriculum, she observed them throughout the semester and
provided feedback to help improve their teaching and their management
skills.
Sophie received a Bachelors of Arts degree in English from the University of
Wisconsin and a Master of Arts degree in Elementary Education from Teachers
College of Columbia University.
